The Quendor Expre

Chatterbox: Pudding's Place

The Quendor Expre

The Quendor Express

Everything in question was a total accident.

It was a total accident that a certain peculiar train with no number stopped at thirteen certain train stations, and picked up thirteen certain people, off to a certain destination.

Yes, it was a total accident.

There are no mistakes in this story.

Just peculiar little accidents.

Like the one that caused The Quendor Express to pull into thirteen train stations of the Chatterbox, and then leave.

---

Yes, a ski lodge. A peculiar ski lodge. Thirteen chatterboxers will board the train, no more, no less.

Chapter 2

Leafy couldn’t sleep. Well, who could, after Emekittycon’s disappearance?

Emekittycon wasn’t dead, just departed.

And Leafy was in denial.

Carefully, making sure not to wake Kitty who had cried herself to sleep in the room the two of them shared, Leafy donned her grey hoodie, and took her phone, turning on the flashlight.

She was going to explore.

The Quendor Express was very dark at night. Leafy’s phone flashlight only illuminated the things directly in front of her, so it was hard to move around quickly without crashing into anything.

I wonder . . . could I take the velvet off of the windows?

Leafy stumbled over to a window, feeling the steady rocking of the train beneath her feet.

She tugged at the red velvet.

It fell down, and Leafy gasped.

The moon lit everything outside in a cool blue glow, showing everything in clear detail. The train was speeding steadily along an absolutely massive bridge, above the largest gulf Leafy had ever seen. It was so deep, she couldn’t see the bottom of it.

It was so wide, so high up . . . just the sight of it made Leafy dizzy. She quickly left the window, continuing on through the cars.

Leafy found that most of the train were passenger cars, with fancy-looking seats and overnight compartments. She did find a room where there were stacks of old train tickets and records. Why The Conductor kept these, she had no idea.

She looked at the dates on some of them.

700 GUE? I’ve never heard of that. What does it stand for? Maybe it’s just in the BC time period?

Leafy left the pile of papers and continued on.

She shivered. The train was dark, and moving shadows crept close to Leafy, sending chills up her spine. It was really creepy, and even more creepy because it was completely silent, and Leafy had just realized that she was in a train about six cars away from her friends with nobody around.

I should get someone to explore with me, maybe that way it won’t be so creepy, Leafy thought.

She carefully walked back to the overnight compartments, and opened the door to Surroundedbybooks’s room.

It was dark.

“Who are you?” Surrounded whispered, her voice trembling.

“Oh, did I scare you?!” Leafy whisper-exclaimed, “I’m Leafy. It’s really dark, and I was wondering if you would want to come explore the train with me. Sorry about that, I guess everyone’s really shaken about Emekittycon!”

Surrounded got up. “Yeah, you scared me. It’s fine. Let’s go exploring then.”

Leafy and Surrounded crept through the empty train cars, lit with Leafy’s phone flashlight.

Suddenly, the train wobbled under their feet.

Leafy crashed to the floor, and Surrounded helped her up unsteadily. The train rocked even more, swaying from side to side.

“What’s going on?!” Leafy shrieked.

Surrounded slammed into the wall, and the red velvet of the window fell off. Her eyes grew wide, and she screamed. “Leafy, we’re going to fall!”

Leafy looked out the window. The train was tilting precariously off the railroad, above the huge gulf.

And then, the world turned sideways.

Leafy screamed. Surrounded screamed. The door’s hinges screamed. The door flew off into the gulf, and Leafy and Surrounded fell out.

“Help!” Leafy yelled.

Only her echoes.

They plunged into darkness.

Leafy felt herself fall onto a hard surface, and her backpack thudded down next to her. She winced. Surprisingly, nothing seemed to be broken.

It was dark.

Leafy scrambled for her phone, which she had been clutching in her hands, and turned the flashlight on. “Surrounded? Are you okay?” she asked, rushing over to Surrounded, who was laying on the floor.

“Yeah, I’m fine. I just hurt all over and THE FREAKING TRAIN JUST CRASHED!” Surrounded yelled, sitting straight up with shock.

All the fear and adrenaline was catching up to Leafy, and she let out a small scream.

“Okay, Leafy, where are we?” Surrounded asked, looking around.

Leafy looked around too. It seemed that they were in a sort of cellar thing. Stairs led up, but the trapdoor was barred and shut and locked.

That left the two passageways. One was a crawlway, and the other was a thin passageway slanting slightly upward. There were gruesome bloodstains on the thin passageway’s walls.

“The crawlway,” Surrounded and Leafy said in unison.

They ducked through the narrow crawlway, and after a bit of walking, came out into a well-lit area. Leafy shut off her flashlight, and then gasped.

They were standing on top of a giant reservoir, with churning water many feet below them. It was so massive, so amazing, Leafy forgot to breathe.

“Wow . . .” Surrounded said, at a loss for words.

Leafy looked around. The path on top of the reservoir led to a large building. “Hey, why don’t we go there?” Leafy asked, pointing to the building.

“Okay then,” Surrounded said.

The two of them walked over to the building. When Leafy entered, she was greeted by a large sign that said The Bank of Zork

“I guess this is a bank,” Surroundedbybooks commented.

They walked through a doorway that led to the bank director’s office. Inside it had been extensively vandalized, but a portrait of a person still hung on the wall. The plaque beneath it read ‘J. Pierpoint Flathead’.

Curiouser and curiouser.

“Hey, look! This looks pretty expensive,” Leafy said, picking up a delicate jewel-encrusted egg.

She tried to open it. It wouldn’t budge.

“Well, why don’t we take that?” Surrounded said, “It might come in useful later.”

“Okay. We should take this too,” Leafy said, ducking under a desk and picking up a lantern that she had spied earlier.

“Good idea. Anyway, let’s leave. This place is giving me the chills,” Surrounded said.

Leafy agreed. The vandalized walls, complete with the cold air this place had was the perfect recipe for a creepy atmosphere.

They looked around the bank a little more. There were separate viewing rooms, as well as a safety deposit with a shimmering curtain of light (Leafy had read enough sci-fi novels to know she shouldn’t touch it). In the end, they decided to exit through a mysterious passage.

Leafy could only hear her footsteps and Surrounded’s on the hard stone floor, until a third set joined theirs.

Leafy whirled around. “Who are you?!” she exclaimed, pulling out her daggers.

The person’s face was hidden. They were carrying a sharp sword, no, a stiletto.

The person stepped closer.

And closer.

Leafy was petrified.

She couldn’t move.

With a single move, the person snatched the egg from Leafy’s hands, and dashed away.

Suddenly, Leafy found that she could move again.

“Oh my salami, that was scary!” Surrounded gasped.

“Let’s keep going before that person returns,” Leafy said, shaken.

That was too scary. She didn’t want to know who that was.

The passageway led into a round room. Leafy and Surrounded had just stepped into the center of it, when the walls started spinning around. After a minute of dizzy whirling, the walls stopped. Leafy looked around. There were 12 doors, and she had no idea where they had come from.

“Where do we go?” Surrounded asked, looking around wildly.

“Um . . . I don’t know, just choose a random door,” Leafy sighed. They were lost, in this room, where it was impossible to get her bearings in.

Surrounded opened a random door. They stepped out, and Leafy immediately recognized the rushing sound of water. They were back on the reservoir!

“Hey, why don’t we try and find the others. They must have fallen down too,” Surrounded suggested.

“Good idea. Let’s go then,” Leafy said.
