Chatterbox: Pudding's Place

Lost in Translation

Lost in Translation

I loved this game when it was first posted a few years back, so I thought I'd revive it!

The rules are pretty easy:

Choose a song, find the lyrics, and copy them into Google Translate. No songs w/ explicit lyrics, obviously.

Translate the lyrics from English to another language. The less like English it is, the better.

Now translate them back to English and post 'em here. You can give us the title or we could try and guess it.

And that's it! Here's a favorite of mine, translated from English to Malagasy and back again. Any guesses? (If it's too tricky, we can try again with a different one.)

I am determined

No need to think about it anymore

If I am wrong, I am right

Look no further

This is not a bad idea

I know it's love but

If I speak to the world

I will never say

That's why I didn't tell you

And that is exactly what I should do

If I love you

Should I leave

Or should I just chase down the street?

Although it does not lead anywhere

Or will it be wasted?

Even if I know my location, do I leave it there?

Should I leave

Or should I just chase down the street?

Even if it doesn’t lead anywhere

I have no clue what that is, sorry! Here's a song translated from English, to Hebrew, to Latin, back to English, since it didn't seem to be sufficiently scrambled after only one translation. It still might be a bit obvious, but here it is anyway:

Sometimes I thank God and my spirit lie beneath the moon
I pray, "Do not take me soon because I am here for the party '

Sometimes tears sick
But neither is this to me, knock on the door
When, therefore, the same is surrounded by the negativity
I know that one day turn around that ...

I waited for him, and prayed me, of my life
And tell people
But if you do not want to any more, that will no longer be wars to fight
And it will be our children to play
One day (one day), one day (one day), one day (oh-oh-oh)
One day (one day), one day (one day), one day (oh-oh-oh)

Nothing to do with winning or losing, because all things we lose when they are kept
Was rending the souls of the innocent and in the tragic style were upon the pavement of the slaughter of the
In order to invite even if the water remains
This mistake, you lose your way (your way)
In order that I will drive you crazy, but it is not so in the way it is, provided it does not (and not by chance)

Okay so I have no clue why we have to translate it to another language and just post the English one here? It kinda makes no sense. Can someone explain? Anyways, here's one of my favorite songs. I did translate it to Kinyarwanda. (whatever the heck that is....) And back to English. And yes, I am aware of using "And" at the beggining of a sentence.

Find table spaces, say your social graces
Bow your head, they're pious here
But you and I, we're pioneers, we make our own rules
Our own room, no bias here
Let 'em sell what they are sellin', there are no buyers here
So gather all the rebels now, we'll rebel-rouse and sing aloud
We don't care what they say no way, no way
And we will leave the empty chairs to those who say we can't sit there
We're fine all by ourselves
So hey, we brought our drum and this is how we dance
No mistakin', we make our breaks, if you don't like our 808s
Then leave us alone, 'cause we don't need your policies
We have no apologies for being
Find me where the wild things are (oh my, we'll be alright, don't mind us)
Find me where the wild things are (oh my, we'll be just fine, don't mind us, yeah)
Find me where the wild things are
I lose my balance on these eggshells
You tell me to tread, I'd rather be a wild one instead
Don't wanna hang around the in-crowd
The cool kids aren't cool to me
They're not cooler than we are
So hey, we brought our drum and this is how we dance
No mistakin', we make our breaks, if you don't like our 808s
Then leave us alone, cause we don't need your policies
We have no apologies for being
Find me where the wild things are (oh my, we'll be alright, don't mind us)
Find me where the wild things are (oh my, we'll be just fine, don't mind us, yeah)
We will carve our place into time and space
We will find our way, or we'll make a way (say hey, hey, hey)
Find you're great, don't you hide your face
Let it shine, shine, shine, shine, shine, shine
So hey, we brought our drum and this is how we dance
No mistakin', we make our breaks, if you don't like our 808s
Then leave us alone, 'cause we don't need your policies
We have no apologies for being
Find me where the wild things are (oh my, we'll be alright, don't mind us)
Find me where the wild things are (oh my, we'll be just fine, don't mind us, yeah)

The idea is that Google Translate is very unreliable, so if you translate something into another language and then translate it back to English, the outcome is completely different from what you originally put into the translator.

I also love that song, Where The Wild Things Are by Alissa Cara, right? The idea is that it makes a fun game, trying to guess what song it is after it's been translated.

This song has been translated from English to French to English to Albanian to English again. And some of the words. . . I don't even know how in the world Google got some of these words. This is truly hilarious. I do think, though, that if you know the song it will still be quite easy to guess.

himself

Pretending he is next to me

only

Walk with him until morning

Without it

I feel his arms around me

And when he loses his way he closes his eyes

And he found me

In the rain the sidewalk shines like silver

All the lights are dim on the river

In the dark the trees are full of starlight

And all I see is him and me forever

And I know I're just interested

That I am talking to myself and not to him

And though I know he is blind

Again I say there is a way for us

I like it

But when the night ends

Ai iku

The river is just a river

Without it

The world around me is changing

The trees are bare and everywhere

The streets are full of strangers

I like it

But every day I learn

All my life

I just pretend

Without me

Her world will continue to revolve

A world full of happiness

That I never knew

I like it

I like it

I like it

But only by myself

I have no words. That is hilarious.

What gave it away was "The trees are bare and everywhere the streets are full of strangers."

The song is "On My Own," from Les Mis, performed in the original broadway cast by Frances Ruffelle, who played the character Éponine.

This was translated to Simplified Chinese, to Russian, to Luxembourgish, to Punjabi, and back to English. I can’t stop laughing:

You can be great

You can express yourself in weapons or drugs

You can be thrown

Are you an adversary for someone's lack of love

Or you could say that

Nothing can hurt you like words

They settle under your skin

Keep no sun inside it

Sometimes shots will win

But if I want you to

Tell me what you want to say

Skip those words

Honestly, I want to meet you

Use what you want to say

Skip those words

Honestly, I want to meet you

I just want to meet you

I just want to meet you

I just want to meet you

I want to see you

I just want to meet you

I just want to meet you

I just want to meet you

I want to see you

Everyone is, everyone is watching

The enemy

Fear of fear, some disappeared

Go for strengthening

Don't run, don't hold your tongue

Maybe you live here

Maybe one day you let the light in.

Tell me what courage you have

Say what you want to say

Let these words fall out

Honestly, I want to meet you

Use what you want to say

Let these words fall out

Honestly, I want to meet you

Innocence, your quiet story

You will not feel well

What do you think?

Leave your words blank

Why didn't you tell them the truth?

Tell me what you want to say

Skip those words

Honestly, I want to meet you

Use what you want to say

Skip those words

Honestly, I want to meet you

I just want to meet you

I just want to meet you

I just want to meet you

I want to see you

I just want to meet you

I just want to meet you

I just want to meet you

Bis Dapre

I just want to meet you

I just want to meet you

I just want to meet you

I just want to meet you

I just want to meet you

I just want to meet you

This is Brave, isn’t it? It’s so weird how it was changed a lot in some places but not in others.

Well, you are a boy,

make a loud noise

Play on the  street and

become a great

person one day

You have mud on your face,

big misfortune

Hit the box and sing

anywhere

Well, you are a loud boy,

make a loud noise

Play on the street and

become a great

person one day

You have mud on your

face, big misfortune

Hit the box and sing

anywhere

We shake you

We shake you

Man, you are a young

man, a tough man

Scream in the streets

and one day conquer

the world

You have blood on

your face, big

misfortune

Shake the banner

everywhere

We rock it, sing it!

We rock you, yes

Hey you are old and

poor

Pleaing with your

eyes, one day I calm

down

You have mud on your

face, big misfortune

Someone should put

you back at your

place, do it!

We do it, we beat her

yes, yes, come on

We do it, we rock it,

well, harder!

We attack you

We shake you

Yes

I guess this one is kind of obvious.
