You sit down

Chatterbox: Pudding's Place

You sit down

You sit down with your favorite novel. You sip a warm beverage from a red mug, settle further into your cozy armchair, and turn a page. A note falls out of the book and onto your lap.

You pick it up. It says,

Dearest Reader,

It is my honour and pleasure to invite you to Chawton Cottage for a literary vacation. If you have enjoyed my books, you will enjoy this peaceful, quiet rest from the stresses of modern life. A carriage will come for you on the 28th of February.

Please return this letter with the enclosed charrie. I hope to see you soon.

Sincerely, Jane.

You are shocked. An invitation to spend time at Chawton Cottage, the home of Jane Austen. Something strikes you as strange, but you forget it and fill out the form.

A carriage pulls up to Quill's house. She looks up from the book she was reading and gets up from her porch swing. The horses pulling the carriage are black, as is the carriage. The driver is a tall man wearing a white wig.

He approaches her, looks over her charrie, then picks up her bag and stows it away. He then opens the door to the carriage and she step in. Two people are sitting facing each other, talking away.

They introduce themselves as Leo and Alex. "Hi," she says. "I'm Quill."

"So," Leo says, "Do you have any idea who Jane Austen is?"

"Um, I know she wrote romance novels," Quill says. "I've never read any of them, though."

"Isn't she dead already, though?" Alex asks as the carriage moves forward again.

"Well, it could be that it's one of those things where they have actors dressed in old clothes and stuff," Leo says. "Unless it's like time travel."

Quill and Alex laugh along with Leo, when suddenly the carriage comes to a halt. "Already?" Quill asks.

In a few moments, a girl steps into the carriage and takes a seat by Alex.

"I'm Quill," Quill says. "This is Leo and Alex."

"Hi, I'm Strawberri." She smiles. "I'm so excited that I'm actually here. This is so cool!"

A few more stops are made, until Wreebo, Tealeaf, Rosemary, moon, Feli, and Skye have been picked up. After driving for only a few minutes, they stop at their final destination.

The driver opens the door and holds it as one by one, the passengers step into the sunlight.

"Whoa," gasps Rosemary. Her purple eyes widen as she takes in the red brick building surrounded by a garden of white, red, yellow, and blue flowers.

"It's so beautiful," Tealeaf says.

A woman wearing an aprom appears from behind the house. "You must be Miss Jane's guests," she says. "Please follow me. I will direct you to your rooms, and then you will join Miss Jane's and her sister for tea."

They follow her inside through a big door, then down a hallway. Up a flight of polished stairs, and down a corridor.

Each person gets a room to themselves, each including one special feature as well as an armchair and bookcase. The half hour before they are called for tea is spent visiting each other's rooms.

Rosemary's POV

A maid in a prim white uniform leads me to the bedroom that is my assignment. "Here is your room" she states "Feel free to take a look around before you have tea.". "Thank you" I say politely. She smiles and leaves. I open the door and peer inside. It is cream and light pink inside. There is a cozy little reading nook in the corner, with a full bookshelf, a small dark oak coffee table, and and a large red chair with a fat cushion. There is a small birch desk with all the necessary stationary. Pushed against the back wall is a rosy four poster bed with two bedside tables. There is a dresser where I can put all of my clothes. But the thing that catches my eye the most what looks like a mini sitting room in the center of the bedroom. There is a small table, several chairs, and a tea tray with real tea!

I don't have much time to marvel over this wonderful little room because someone is knocking on my door.

Can someone write about visiting my room? Because I couldn't decide who to write about.

I'm really sorry this is late, I was writing it and then my computer died. Sorry.

Also, I'm going to need one female to volunteer to participate in a dating subplot. (Leo, is it okay if I envolve you in this?)

At exactly 4:00, the maid came back to Tealeaf's room, the last. She knocked on the door and when it opened, she said, "Miss, are you ready for tea?"

Tealeaf nodded and joined her and the others in the hall. The maid led them downstairs again and to a parlour.

"Oh," Feli said when the entered the room. It was painted a soft blue and had crown molding. On one side there was a portrait of a man and a woman standing by each other. They were smiling, dressed very finely, and something about the woman's eyes struck Tealeaf.

As soon as they entered the room, people started chattering, and sitting down at small tables around the room. "Ah-hem," the maid said, reminding them that she was there. "Ladies," she said, glowering at a group of girls who continued to talk.

When everyone was silent, she continued. "Miss Jane and Miss Austen will be joining you soon. Mrs. Clemsworth, the housekeeper, has assigned you seats for now. At the first table, Tealeaf and Wreeboo."

Tealeaf went over to sit at the table closest to the door they had come through. Wreeboo sat across from her. Between them sat a pitcher of lemonade, a pot of tea, a vanilla cake, and a pile of toast and assorted jellies.

"Hi," said Wreeboo as she sliced the cake.

"Hi," Tealeaf said.

Wreeboo took a bite of cake. She swallowed it and said, "Would you like some?"

"Sure." When Tealeaf bit into it, she thought she really must have died. So there is a heaven she thought.  The cake was perfect, not too sweet, fluffy, moist.

Just then, she noticed that everyone was looking at a woman who had entered the room. She had dark brown hair and beautiful dark eyes, and was of an average height.

"Good day," she said. "I'm Cassadra Austen."

Tealeaf didn't know exactly what to say, so she just kept her mouth shut. Wreeboo, however, greeted her enthusiastically.

Cassandra walked over to the table where Strawberri and Rosemary were sitting and stuck up a conversation.

Wreeboo and Tealeaf were in the middle of a fascinating conversation about if it was possible for man to travel to Mars when another woman came in.

She had lighter brown hair and was taller than Cassandra, but they had the same eyes. Tealeaf was sure this must be Jane.

She greeted her guests and, to their surprise, sat with Tealeaf and Wreeboo.

Wreeboo was soon talking with her, but Tealeaf was still a little amazed, and she wasn't sure what exactly to say.

Jane was telling them about her work in progress, The Watsons.

"It sounds really interesting," Wreeboo said. "Do you know when you are going to finish it?"

"I hope I can finish it by the end of this year. But time does have a way of getting away from us, does it not?" Jane and Wreeboo laughed.

Tealeaf felt a little awkward just sitting there, so she piped up. "Would you like some cake? It's very good."

"Oh, I'm sure it is lovely," Jane said. "Please do give me a slice."

After tea, everyone left that room and had the option to join the Austens or go back to their rooms. Most wanted to stay in the company of the Austens, but moon decided to try and catch a nap.

The rest of the evening was filled with meals, which the guests soon learned were many and large, and spending time in the parlour. Some of them read, some drank tea, and some chatted.

Too soon, the first day drew to a close, and Tealeaf had to go to bed. She had no idea what awaited her in the morning.
