Procreate/art tips?

Hi! I just got procreate, and it's amazing, and my cousin showed me how to use it, but this is my first time doing digital art and I need some tips. One question I have: do you have a preference between a stylus and just using your finger, what are the pros and cons, etc.? Also, what kind of stylus do you use? I'm thinking about getting an apple pencil, but the one that's compatible with the iPad I'm using is $99 (plus tax and probably shipping) and I'm trying to see if there's an equally good/better but cheaper option. Also, does anyone have layering tips? and making shapes come out the way you want them tips? I know how to hold down and get the perfect ellipse/circle/arc/line/etc. but sometimes I want an irregular shape, which is annoyingly hard to make without having weird squiggly lines instead of straght ones. And... any other tips you think would be useful.

Also, tips just for art in general- I love drawing and sketching buuuut I'm not great at it. I think I need some help with proportions and also drawing hands and feet. And positions that don't look unnatural and gross. Does anyone have strategies they use for those things?

Thanks :)

Of course! My first tip is, get a stylus if you can! I use an Apple Pencil and I’m satisfied with it, so I don’t really know much about alternatives, but I will say that most styluses allow you to change the pressure of your lines, which makes your lineart look so much better. In regards to shapes, i guess just practice making your hand steadier? For certain shapes, you can use the selection tool and set it to color fill, then just layer the shapes and liquify if necessary. (The liquify tool is in the menu accessed by tapping the magic wand icon, and it can be used to distort your art.) Also, don’t use the airbrush tool for shading. It makes your shading look amateur and halfhearted. If you want your shading to be blurred, use the gaussian blur tool. And one more thing: there’s an official Procreate handbook online! Obviously I can’t link it here, but a quick google search should find it for you. It covers basically everything there is to know about Procreate, and it’s really helpful for learning how to use the program.

I hope these tips helped, and let me know if you have any more questions!

Ok! We, the digital art CBers, have got you covered, Lumi!

(I wanted to say that so badly)

A way to make irregular shapes, if it's full of lines: Do it, then when it correects to a line or something, tap the 'edit shape' at the top, and there will be a polyline option.

Or, just do it piece by piece.

Hmm...what else? Oh, right!

Styluses are generally better..they give you like pressure options and stuff. Apple Pencils are generally the most common. However, I did get a stylus that didn't have pressure stuff. It was for $25.

Uhhh yeah. that's all i have for now, see ya later!
