The last whispers of scarlet dusk are reduced to fading streaks in the darkening sky, and the first few stars are winking dimly above. The crowded buildings and skyscrapers reach upwards and the shadows that they cast are sharp and dark. A figure is perched on the edge of a building’s flat roof, sitting with the sounds of traffic and people swirling below him. His black sweater blends in with the shadows and he is wearing ripped jeans and worn sneakers. His pale skin is in sharp contrast with his dark brown hair that falls across his forehead and into his eyes. At his side is a dog, a large mutt with sharp ears and tan-and-brown fur. The lights from the city below reflect in the dog’s large brown eyes. The boy sits back, one hand on the dog’s back, and casts his gaze up to the sky where the stars have collected, their crystalline glow drowning out the harsh lights of the cars and buildings. Then, the boy gets to his feet and glances once more over his shoulder before disappearing into the shadows, his dog silently following him.

Golden sunlight melts through the canopy and pools on the dusty ground. The trees are all close together, their water-laden fronds brushing against one another. The chattering of a nearby stream is barely audible underneath a layer of noise from the animals that jump from branch to branch. Vines lace through the trees and the air is heavy with humidity. A girl steps out from the undergrowth, her footsteps sure and strong. She’s young, with shining, dark, curly hair cut off right above her shoulders. She’s dressed as an explorer, backpack flung over one shoulder, heavy with supplies, and her clothing is simple yet effective. Her eyes resemble kaleidoscopes, flashing between so many different luminescent colors as her gaze searches the foliage. Then, her attention flits to her hand, in which a dull yet glittering golden compass is resting. She takes in the trees, the sky and the position of the sun, until she smiles and takes a confident step into the rainforest.

Darkness settles over the land so that the dim glow of the moon is only barely visible through a heavy veil of clouds. A castle is nestled in a dip of the emerald-green valley, a small river winding around it. The turrets that fly flags pierce the night sky. The moss-covered stone walls are crumbling slightly and every window is pulled tightly shut behind iron bars. Except one. At the top of the tower, a flickering light penetrates the complete darkness. A person is seated behind an ornate dark wooden desk directly behind the open window, a candle casting the soft light. Their eyes are such a bright blue they almost seem violet in the firelight, and their hair is a dusky brown that matches their dark red clothing. In their hand is a feather quill, and they’re scribbling onto a piece of parchment, periodically dipping the quill in an inkwell. A gleam of elation glints in their vibrant eyes, as if they won’t cease to write until the candle burns out and the castle is truly left in inky darkness until dawn.

The sun burns high in the sky, a crimson disk in the perfectly blue sky. Despite the afternoon lighting, it’s still almost cold enough to freeze water. The bare mountain rocks reach impossibly high, wreathed in misty clouds. Large birds wheel above, screeching their harsh song into the chill air. The sunlight glints off something on a grey mountain ledge; it’s two silver peregrine feathers braided in the chestnut-brown hair of a girl, whose eyes are fixed on the birds circling her. Her simple gray dress and leggings blend into the rock around her, and even though her dress is sleeveless, the cold doesn’t seem to bother her at all. The girl holds out her arm silently and closes her eyes, as if concentrating. Suddenly, the largest bird dives from the flock and flares out its wings at the last second to land on her outstretched arm with an ear splitting shriek. The girl doesn’t even blink. Instead, she tilts her head and smiles, skimming her hand down the peregrine falcon’s soft feathers. Eventually the sun will set, and she will be alone. Until tomorrow, when the birds will return and her smile will shine from her cleft in her mountain once again.

Thank you so much!  I love the discriptions and I can see the setting so clearly.  You chose the words well, painting a clear picture with only a few words.  Thank you!

Snow drifts from the slate-grey sky in a seemingly never ending stream of white, coating the already frozen trees and hills. Wind whips the ground, flinging ice and snow into the whirling turmoil in the air. Not a single animal dares to venture out in the winter storm. A small cabin sits half-buried in snow, the outer wooden walls slick with frost. Inside, a fireplace is alight in shades of flaming saffron and ruby in the middle of a semicircle of well-loved furniture. A girl is sitting on a worn-down rug next to the flame, and a few feet away a pair of heavy winter boots are drying in its warmth. Raging wind rattles the window panes, as if trying to pierce the comfortable atmosphere inside. The girl is wearing a long sleeved cream colored shirt and red leggings. A candy cane is tucked behind one ear, slightly tangled in her long, dark brown hair that falls freely down her back. She sips from a mug of steaming hot chocolate slowly. The storm will die away, and she will be free to roam and explore, but for now, the firelight will have to be enough.
