Tall white walls

Chatterbox: In This Month's Issue

Tall white walls

Tall white walls stretching up to eternity...............how were they even built?

Sunlight coming lazily through the window in the carpeted hallway.............the inlaid jewels gleam in the summer light.

A clock ticks..........it's the only noise. The palace is resting. The grand hall, its fine wood floors swept clean, is empty and quiet. A spider works on its spiderweb; the foundation is a potted cactus on the queen's windowsill. But the queen doesn't know.

The pearly gates are closed, the guards awake but drowsy in the gentle heat, their tired faces pressing against the damp grass.

Who knows what's going on in the rest of the kingdom, this bustling world they call the Chatterbox. This is a place to contemplate the meaning of things, the reason behind it all. But don't get too profound - we still want to have fun.

The clock ticks.

The spider spins.

All is peace.

There's a common glitch on the Chatterbox where the first comment on a new thread sends it to the bottom pages, and the first comment created there (after the first comment has been posted) sends it up again.

Deep in the castle, a woman reclines on an embellished lawn chair. She's wearing all white, reminiscent of ancient Greek women, and her dress is trimmed with gold. "Bloody hell," she says, with feeling.

"Sorry."

"... and I didn't know you could pop up like that. However, this is the place we contemplate our world, and that was about how I felt after some somber reflection." She sat up straight and took a sip of her nonalcoholic elderflower cocktail, which had materialized in her hand.
