The Quest for Independence
Lily was completing her sampler when her friend Kate tapped the sleeve of her dress. “Lily, my father is going to a meeting tonight in Williamsburg with General Washington about the Revolution!” Kate whispered excitedly.
After her lessons, Lily raced home, eager to show her mother her sampler. When she skidded into the parlor, she was shocked to see several British officers. Lily ran into the kitchen and found her mother preparing tea.
“Lily, take this tea to the parlor,” her mother whispered nervously. “These officers have decided to stay in our home. We must cooperate,” her mother said sadly.
Lily delivered the tea and noticed the officers looking at a map. They folded up the map and put it aside to enjoy their tea and biscuits.
Later that night, after everyone was asleep, Lily got some water to drink. As she passed through the parlor, she noticed the map was left on the table. Looking around to make sure no one saw her, she slipped the map into her pocket, grabbed a cape, and ran out to the stable. She quickly saddled up her pony, Buttercup, and headed for Williamsburg.
It was dark, but the full moon lit the way. After riding for an hour, she saw Christina Campbell’s Tavern in Williamsburg. She hitched her pony and nervously looked around. She then crept up to the door and peeked inside. She saw a tall man speaking to a group. It was General Washington!
Lily accidentally slammed the door and everyone stopped talking to look at her. She swallowed the lump in her throat and made her way to General Washington. She whispered that she needed to show him something.
He took her aside, and she showed him the map. General Washington took it, studied it, and gave it back. “Lily, you are very brave. This map will help us win the Revolution! Now, quickly return it to where you found it.”
Lily raced home and replaced the map on the table. A few weeks later, the British were defeated at Yorktown and the Revolution came to an end!
