Valentine’s Day

“Bailey, get up, get up, it is Valentine’s Day!” Bailey opened her eyes but then quickly closed them and buried her head in her pillow. Riley, Bailey’s six-year-old sister, kept talking about how her valentines were going to be the best in her class. Bailey totally forgot about Valentine’s Day. Then it hit her. . . . She did not have anything for her best friend, June!

Bailey was so worried when she got to school. What would June say? Would June be mad? When she saw June she tried to hide so she would not see her. But June walked right up to her and gave her a big hug and said, “Happy Valentine’s Day, Bailey!

“Yeah, you, too,” Bailey said shyly.

The rest of the day was a disaster. Mr. Lucas said that it was time to pass out valentines. Bailey had nothing to pass out so she had to just sit there while everyone passed their valentines out. Mostly she got stuff like store-bought cards and candy.

But then she saw a note in her pile of valentines. It said: We all need someone we can turn to, someone we can always count on. Bailey, you are the person I can turn to. You are the best friend anyone could have. Your BFF, June.

Bailey then realized what she needed to do. She walked over to June and said, “I can always turn to you, too. You are my best friend.” Bailey and June hugged each other. Bailey finally knew what the meaning of Valentine’s Day was. It wasn’t the candy or the cards. It was about sharing love and friendship with each other.
