Mia and Me
    
I stared stonily out the car window, my bottom lip sticking out just enough to show I was upset. It had taken me months to perfect that expression, and if you ask me, it’s perfect for the occasion on which your older sister leaves for college--in Indiana.
    
“Do you have to be so melodramatic about this? I’ll be home for Thanksgiving and Christmas, and some weekends.” Mia had sighed when she told me which college she would be attending. It still didn’t make me feel any better.
    
Mia and I had shared a room since I was a baby, and I knew that it would be a whole lot lonelier if that top bunk was empty. We were five years apart, but we always had fun together, even when she was old enough to babysit me. We shared many good memories.
    
My mouth quirked a little, trying to smile, but I wasn’t about to let it. I glanced over at Mia instead. She looked nervous, and it almost made me regret not getting her a going-away gift.
    
No, Megan, I chided myself, trying hard to dismiss that thought. I’m still mad at her, remember?
    
Mia turned to me, but I quickly swiveled my head, my chin-length hair slapping my cheeks. Out my window I saw we had taken the exit off the highway, so the scenery had changed. In fact, I could see the airport.
    
The airport is a busy place in late August, so we had to quickly say our goodbyes to Mia. I don’t think I let anger get in the way that time, because I gave Mia a huge hug and mumbled something about being sorry I had been a brat about this.
    
“Aw, that’s OK, Meg. I would feel the same way if you were leaving.” She smiled, handing me a small gift.
    
“For me?” I inquired, opening the box, which held a shiny silver heart-shaped necklace engraved with an M.
    
“For Megan or Mia?” I asked, and Mia shrugged.
    
“Interchangeable. Open it.” Inside the locket were two pictures: Mia and me.
