The Roar of the Beast

The road is shrouded in mist. The yellow stripes are the only color present. In the distance, a roaring sound is audible. The sound rapidly becomes louder until suddenly, a beast jumps out of the fog. Illuminated in a spotlight with an unknown source, its shiny surface glints, and two bright yellow eyes stare at me. It roars again, the sound close to deafening. I’ve heard about these monsters, though few dare to speak of them.

They call them cars.

My head snaps up as I awaken from the dream, terror filling my eyes until I realize it’s just a dream. I breathe a sigh of relief and stretch my legs. My house is quite small with dark brown walls and a round hole for a door. I walk outside on my balcony, also dark brown and covered in leaves. I glance up at the sky. The moon is hardly a sliver tonight and stars twinkle in the wide expanse of inky blackness. All traces of sleepiness gone, I jump down off my balcony onto the rough, spiky grass. I look back at my house. It’s a good home, I think.

We squirrels know how to pick good trees.

I am about to run off to look for nuts, when something stops me.  A feeling that I can’t quite place. Almost a sense of foreboding. And in the distance a roaring sound is audible.
