Winter World

People say that winter is a world of cold:
That the trees are stripped and have grown old,
That the sun edges away from the bare isolated land,
That the wind slaps your face with its vicious hand,
That the birds’ beautiful sounds get washed away,
That the children huddle inside and don’t go out to play.
But people couldn’t be more wrong,
For winter is a world of life!
Children are outside having snowball fights,
Making snowmen and tasting the sun.
They cuddle near the fireplace
And draw in all the warmth.
They sip on hot cocoa and tell funny jokes and stories.
Then, as winter slowly drifts away,
The sun strolls back as a blazing ball of flame.
The children are scorched and sunburned
And drenched in pools of sweat,
But in the back of their burned minds
Are the memories that were made,
And when next winter comes
A winter world of life again.
