Midnight Ride

The bright moon lit a path for Paul Revere to begin his midnight ride. A wolf loudly howled at the sight of the moon, and it scared his horse. Paul Revere urged her forward. “Brown Beauty, we still have to deliver the warning about the British attack so the Minutemen will be ready,” he said.

His heart raced as he thought about his friends, William Dawes and Samuel Prescott. How far had they gotten? Would the message even be carried? What if he got caught and then nobody would know the British were going to attack? It was hard to see in the dark, but he knew how to get around in the forest. The whipping wind kept him awake. His left hand felt like an ice cube on the reigns he grasped. With his other hand, he held on to his hat, for it could blow away.

He reached the shoreline of the Charles River and carefully stepped into his friends’ rowboat. As they glided, Paul Revere gazed at the water. He saw a large, blurry shape reflected in the water and he looked up. He found himself staring at a warship. A British flag whipped in the air. Any minute now he felt that a British general could turn around and spot them. The rowboat oars lifted and made a splash in the water. They kept going. His heart was beating faster than it ever had before.

When he made it safely across the river, he sighed in relief. Both of his friends, Dawes and Prescott, were waiting for him. Paul ran up and down the streets yelling, “The British are attacking!”

He could hear warning bells ring and saw sleepy men gathering their weapons. He turned around to go warn other people, but then he caught a glimpse of British soldiers.

“Dawes! Prescott! Get out of here! British soldiers are coming!”

After he warned them, there was no time to run. British soldiers grabbed him by the arms and took him away. But he knew all that work wasn’t for nothing. The Minutemen were ready.
