Poetry Contest: Anything You Like!

Submitted by: Stefanie Z., age 14, Waverly, PA

The rush and thrum of clear foam-capped waves
As they glide over smoothly packed sand
Set my little corner of the world,
Where the Earth hangs in its delicate, beautiful balance,
At peace.

I revel in the tranquility, soaring over the sparkling ocean,
My gritty sand-coated hands grasping the metal chains of my tire swing.
The sea spray kisses my face as I whirl joyfully through the air,
Suspended in a magical moment.

My hair streams loosely about me,
Crystals of ocean water flying from its strands.
My laughter cascades on salty air currents,
Echoing out to the horizon.
Glimpses of my little sister,
Licking a melting strawberry ice cream cone
Come in and out,
In and out,
Blurring disillusioningly,
Like the tide.

I spin and spin and spin forever,
Willing myself not to imagine the time when this moment,
This sense of aerial weightlessness
Will have died with the last smudge of crimson effervescence in the sky,
Buried in my memory.
