Sparky Finds His Fire

“We’re going camping!” the Dragon Scout leader proclaimed. The Dragon Scouts, a group of young dragons, lived by their motto, “Every dragon is a leader.”

All the Dragon Scouts cheered in excitement, except Sparky. Sparky had been teased his whole life about his size and webbed feet. Only two and a half feet long and one and a half feet tall, he was dwarfed by the other dragons. His feet were different. They were built for swimming, not walking.

“You walk like a duck,” the other dragons teased.

When they arrived at camp, canoeing was the first activity on the schedule. The Scouts in boat number three loaded the Dragonlings (beginner Dragon Scouts) into the canoe and realized they forgot paddles. They went off to get paddles and abandoned the Dragonlings. The canoe drifted to the center of the pond, cradling the crying Dragonlings.

Sparky, a natural swimmer, jumped into the pond and quickly swam to the Dragonlings, his red scales glimmering in the morning light. He tied the rope from the front of the boat to the end of his arrowhead tail. Sparky pulled the boat to shore, saving the Dragonlings.

“I did it! I actually did it!” Sparky said to himself proudly.

The other Dragon Scouts were surprised. They had underestimated Sparky.

That evening, the Dragon Scout leader asked, “Who wants to make s’mores?!” The Dragon Scouts cheered, except Sparky. Sparky was nervous because the other dragons could blow real fire, not just tiny sparks like him.

When the first dragon tried to roast his marshmallow, he accidentally yawned out a huge burst of fire, and his marshmallow disintegrated. The next dragon, who was allergic to pollen and everything outdoors, sneezed a gigantic flame and melted his marshmallow into a gooey mess. Sparky, on the other hand, only made a few sparks, but his marshmallow roasted perfectly. Soon all the Dragon Scouts wanted Sparky to toast their marshmallows.

That night as Sparky snuggled into bed, he peered at the Dragon Scout motto above the door. Maybe a tiny, red, web-footed dragon can be a leader, too, thought Sparky, as he fell asleep.
