350 Worlds or Else!

“Wee-oooh, wee-ooh,” screeched the fire alarm. Mr. Feugo was mad, as usual. You don’t work for Dragonfly magazine if you can’t take the heat. Literally. Since Mr. Feugo is a fire-breathing dragon and very temperamental. One time he got mad at the crossword puzzle I made for the January edition. There were too many words he didn’t know. He turned from indigo to lavender, then from lavender to fuchsia. Before I could say anything, he blasted the entire shipment of magazines to ashes. And who do you think had to clean up the mess?

Most of the time he just reads the stories readers send in, but last month he had a “great” idea. He put an ad in the magazine asking for readers to write about their favorite indigo dragon. He expected they would all be about him. I wasn’t so sure.

Over the next two weeks, the entries came in, but Mr. Feugo was less than pleased. Each story was at least ten pages long. He was so angry, that he incinerated them all in one breath! Then, feeling a bit sorry and realizing he now had nothing to print in the next magazine, he wrote each of the authors the following letter:

Dear Bub,
Please try again. 350 words or else!
Cordially, etc.,
Mr. Feugo
Editor-in-Chief, Articles Reviewer, and Head Indigo Dragon

He asked me to look over the letter. When I told him he might explain a bit more, he nearly blasted my head off! Talk about short on words. I delivered the letters, and soon new entries came in. As Mr. Feugo read them, his eyes bugged out.

“What’s wrong?” I asked him.

“They called me the big bad dragon!” he yelled.

Whoosh went the blue flames. That was the end of that. Needless to say, there were no reader submissions accepted that month, and you can guess who had to come up with a filler story for the empty page. I would write more, but I see a plume of fire coming my way. . . .
