Love Is the Best Antidote

Owlton was a small town that was suffering from a drought. The roads were cracked, and the plants were dying off day by day. Everyone’s head drooped; no one talked much, except for a few, the ones who had hope that someday everything would be fine.

One girl named Elena felt hope somewhere inside of herself. She knew some way to fix this would arise, and she wanted to rescue her city. Therefore, she headed to her favorite information-finding place, the library. As soon as she arrived, she spotted a book about droughts and how to stop them. She learned that there had been a similar drought in 1991. After reading the whole book, she found the antidote to droughts: show love to a mythical creature. All Elena had to do was find a cave where a dragon lived.

Elena followed the long, dusty trail out of town and up into the mountains. After an exhausting journey, she finally reached a large cave. Peeking in, she discovered a dragon.

The dragon had obsidian-like scales, glowing eyes, and a jaw set with hatred and loneliness. When Elena saw the dragon, she had a little fear, but she clung to the hope of making the city attractive again.

The dragon roared, “What do you want?”

Elena replied softly, “Hello, sir. I’ve come to ask just one small favor. Can you help me bring my dusty city back to a flourishing place? In return, I’ll take care of you for the rest of your life.”

The dragon and Elena talked for some time. They had many things in common, and both liked helping people. Eventually, the dragon agreed to save Owlton, and in return, she would take care of the dragon.

When the dragon reached Owlton, he sprinkled blue sparkly dust on the city. Suddenly, two very long creeks appeared where the old sandy desert had been. Now, the city would never run out of water.

Elena knew she could keep her promise, and her love for her people made her love the dragon, too, and she found that love is the best antidote.
