Dethroning of a Queen

One day, I went to the peninsula
The soft sand slowly sinking.
I climbed atop a half-submerged rock
And stood there gazing, thinking.
Queen of the World, what I called myself
Ah, what triumph there on the rock!
But alas, pride goeth before a fall
My glory was soon to be stopped.
I tottered—I teetered—things were going downhill!
One way—the other—I couldn’t stay still!
“Help,” I cried. “I’m going to fall!”
But, alas—in vain was my call.
Back, back, into the water I fell
A great splash went up, muffling my yell.
The water was freezing—shockingly cold.
I winced as I glimpsed the sun’s mocking gold.
Now I was wet, soaked all the way through
While the chilly, cold wind relentlessly blew.
My warmth was all gone, along with my pride
I shivered and shook, wishing I could just hide.
But I dragged myself up and out of the lake
What a terrible, foolish, and clumsy mistake!
Frigid, I began to walk away
Unfortunately . . . I’d always remember this day.
