My Truest Friend

Dear Kitty,

I’m sitting here, thinking hard in the Secret Annex,
There’s one thing on my mind today; it’s certainly complex.

I wonder, Kitty, who, or what, can I call my truest friend,
Aren’t friends supposed to stay together till the very end?

I guess that’s changed since we all went into hiding,
But even in my best friend, Lies, I wouldn’t be confiding.

I’d like to thank you, Kitty, you are always kind to me,
Even though you cannot share a welcome cup of tea.

You know my weary story, to you, my secrets I will tell,
Perhaps one day, you’ll help me describe this living hell.

When I feel lost and angry, you invite me to turn a page,
You help me think of better things that get rid of all my rage.

I could go on for hours and I know you’ll never judge me,
Making you the type of friend only a diary can be.

I believe that we have a friendship that will never end,
So I thank you, Kitty, for being my truest friend.

Yours,
Anne Frank
