Saltwater Tears

If I’d known how she’d feel, what she’d say
I would’ve been careful, chosen my words, thought
I would’ve thought before I blurted
But although she didn’t speak, the look
On her face was enough, I could tell
Finally, she found words—spoke, then
Turned away, hurt.
Her words stung my heart, cut me like a sword
A lump rose in my throat
I wanted to speak, but I couldn’t
I saw her turn back, saw her arms unfold,
Open wide, like wings, spread as she ran
I felt her hug, and my eyes flooded with tears
