Story Contest: Acts of Courage - Amanda S. - 06/04/15

Story Contest: Acts of Courage
There I was, clinging to the craggy cliff over an upset sea, tossing and turning as I sometimes had done in my sleep. My mission was near impossible. But I knew failure wasn’t an option.
I knew this wasn’t for me, but for my people, the Omegans. For them, would I be willing to fall into the sea and swim to the altar in the center? For them, would I be willing to retrieve the Amyond, the most precious stone, giving us freedom? For them, would I be willing to act?
I gazed into the thrashing water, seeing the altar and the Amyond, looking like gold pieces kissed by a sunset, then peacock feathers, then shimmering reds, oranges, yellows, greens, blues, and purples. Despite the rain, wind, and waves, the Amyond seemed dry.
Clutching the cliff, I remembered home. Olive, Mom, and Dad. I remembered endless hours of fun when we Omegans were allowed to freely use our powers. I remembered cozy nights by the crackling green, blue, and purple fire; the seemingly endless days in the rolling hills of Omega Territory, the place that was a paradise.
My last memory was of me and my mom. King had sentenced all Omegans to death, and I had courageously volunteered to go on this quest. My mom hugged me and said, “Miracle, I know you will be the miracle, my girl. Thank you. I believe in you.”
I believe in you.
Tears pricked my eyes, so I gritted my teeth and closed them. I heard the steady clip-clop of horse steps. From what I heard, they were about a mile away, but they were moving fast. I knew the steps were King and his men, coming to take the Amyond before I did.
I knew what I was going to do. I leapt and now I was dangling from my fingertips. I thought of Olive and Mom and Dad. I knew that the choice I was going to make was the right one. Because Miracle Johnson never gives up.
So I took a deep breath and let go.
