Story Contest: Escaping a Monster
How I Was Captured by a Troll
It could happen to anyone. One moment I was happily running home from school and decided to take a shortcut through the park near our house. I ran along, when suddenly I tripped over a particularly large root and fell down a big hole.
"Ouch," I said when I hit the bottom, spitting bits of dirt out. I was in a hole. As I looked around, I realized I was in a tunnel that stretched farther than I could see in both directions.
Suddenly a big guy emerged from the tunnel to the left. He was squat, hairy, and wearing large, stripy suspenders. He grabbed me and lifted me up. His breath was putrid!
Finally he spoke. "Welcomes to underworld. This be Trollheim. I be troll."
A troll? Gulp. "Are you a nice and friendly troll?" I asked.
The troll laughed. "No, no trolls is never nice. We is mean and nasty! If people cannot answer our riddles, we eats them. You play riddle game with me now." The troll sat down and stroked his greasy beard as he struggled to come up with a riddle. I sat down, too. The troll sat there for a while and then said, "What is meaner than a bull, stronger than a grizzly, and cleverer than a person? You get three guesses."
Uhhh . . . "a really smart, angry whale?"
"Whale? Ho, ho. Guess again."
"A T-Rex?"
"Guess again!" The troll got out a napkin and stared hungrily at me.
Think carefully, I thought. What would a troll think was mean, strong, and smart? The answer struck me.
"Oh . . . could it possibly be a . . . troll?"
The troll went white. "No . . . no . . . phooey! You cheat! You a lying, cheating human. Gahhhh!"
While the troll sobbed and banged his fists on the ground, I quietly crept away down the tunnel and crawled up the hole. As I ran home, I could hear the troll's angry roars as he figured out that I had gone. To this day, I never go back to that park and I never take a shortcut on my way home from school!
