Story Contest: Escaping a Monster
Dragonsong
It was a warm summer day, July 18, and I was playing outside. I ran barefooted across the greeny yellow grass. My long summer dress swirled out at the edges ever so slightly as I spun around. It felt so free and floaty.
Was it a dream? It got so vapory all of a sudden, and rainbows glittered in the vapor. I closed my eyes, and when I opened them, a great green dragon stood above me. Her scales were jagged, rough, and worn. Her wings were bedraggled, and her eyes were dull. She looked sad and angry like she had been abandoned. She took a thundering step toward me.
I closed my eyes and I told myself that it was only a dream. I started to hum a song. I hoped the dragon would be gone.
When I opened my eyes, the looming shadow of the dragon was still there. I knew it was not a dream. Still, I kept on humming, and I slowly looked up at the dragon.
Before my eyes, a change took place. The dragon turned from green to a shiny, perfect gold. Her eyes had a gentle fire in them that they had not had before. She was slowly flapping her wings.
I started to sing, and the clear, liquid music seemed to overtake the dragon. I watched as I kept singing, and she flapped her wings until she was flying. As quickly as it had happened, the dragon disappeared in a rainbow swirl of vapor. I will never forget that magical day.
Now, whenever I hum that song, the beautiful golden dragon always comes back to listen, always disappearing in a swirl of rainbow vapor.
