Story Contest: Escaping a Monster
"That is what I have to fight to become your apprentice?" I asked the mage.
"Yes," he affirmed gleefully. I studied my opponent through the window looking on the testing area.
She was a girl, as black as an abyss. The edges of her body seemed to be not quite defined. Her eyes were crimson, her teeth sharp. Catching my eye, she pressed her face against the window from inside, smiling evilly. I jumped back. I heard her cackle, and then she sprinted to the other end of the room.
"What weapons do I have?" I squeaked, terrified.
"A good old-fashioned projector and set of slides."
"What? You expect me to fight something that can suck blood through her fingers as well as her mouth with that? Are you out of your mind?"
But at that moment I was taken away by guards to the testing room, no matter how much I resisted. I was shoved in with my "weapons," and the door was locked. The girl saw me and grinned. She walked slowly across the room toward me. She had time, and I couldn't escape.
What was I supposed to do? Hit her with the projector I couldn't lift? I turned it on, desperate. It showed a slide that was solid red. As she looked at it, she started to drool, anticipating my blood. I quickly switched slides. Black, or a very dark purple. Seeing this, her outline became even more defined; she looked strengthened, walking a little quicker. I only had enough time for one more slide. I looked at the rainbow of colored plastic. Which would work best? Think, I told myself. What is the opposite of black? My thoughts clicked. I put the white slide in. On seeing that projected, the girl screeched. She stopped, appalled. I saw her feet begin to dissolve, and rapidly her body followed. The last thing I saw was her mouth, with its sharp teeth. Then she popped out of existence. I was let out and triumphantly walked up to the mage.
"Piece of cake!" I said.
