Story Contest: Escaping a Monster

Submitted by: Jessica S., age 12, Dallas, TX

I was opening my locker when the Fabulous Five came up to me. They are the most popular girls in my grade, I thought, wondering what they were going to say. I politely said, "Hi!"

Libby, the leader of the group, said, "Cara, don't try out for soccer this year because there are only six spots on the varsity team, and we take up five of them, and we really want to play with Abby because she is a lot better than you. Also, if you try out and we hear about it, we will beat up you and your sister."

I cowered in the corner while the Fabulous Fiver hovered over me.

The day finally came for soccer tryouts, and I knew that I shouldn't try out. My conscience said that I should, because soccer is what I love to do, yet the other side of my conscience said that I wouldn't want to get beaten up and I probably wouldn't make the team, so I shouldn't. The side that was telling me not to try out was like a monster in my closet making noises and keeping me from going to sleep. I didn't know what to do.

It was four o'clock, and I would have to decide now what to do. I decided to try out and do my best because sooner or later I would have to learn that I'm the boss of me and my friends or arch enemies can't tell me what to do.

Coach Kelly was walking down the hall to post the varsity team list on the wall. I looked at it. It was numbered 1 to 6 in no particular order. First listed was Darla. Next was Emily. I couldn't see my name yet, but I knew that all of the Fabulous Five couldn't be on the list. The last four girls were Abby, Karen, Kate, and me! I couldn't believe my eyes! I had conquered my conscience! I had walked into my closet and learned that a kitten was playing in my closet, not a monster.
