Behind enemy lines. Sean felt the danger in his bones. He pulled out his phone and glanced at it. It was a reassuring habit, thought he knew it didn’t work where he was.

A week earlier, Sean was a sixth-grade nobody--decent grades, average at sports. Then one day his uncle had met him after school.

“I know I can count on you,” Uncle had said. “I’m fighting an important war. You’ll be my spy.”

And here he was.

Sean reached the enemy camp. There were soldiers with machine guns, guarding it from all sides.

“Name?” one soldier asked. “Age? Purpose?”

Sea gulped. “Sean Gallagher,” he said. “Twelve. I want to join.”

The guard nodded and turned away. Sean steeled himself. It was time.

Sean followed the guard into a modern, steel-and-glass building. Right by the entrance, a man with a gold badge was sitting at a desk. His intense stare made Sean flinch.

“I am the supervisor,” the man said. “What do you want?”

Sean swallowed hard and lifted his chin. “My name is Sean Gallagher, sir. I’m twelve. I’d like to join your organization.”

“Interesting,” said the man. “What would you do?”

“Oh . . . just train. Learn what’s what. So I can be a soldier someday.”

The supervisor’s expression shifted slightly. He almost looked . . . impressed? “Fine, Sean, you’re in. Thomas will show you around.”

Sean grinned. He wasn’t faking his relief. “Thank you!”

The guard, Thomas, led Sean outside.  “That was the Executives’ Building.” He gestured to the outer edges of the camp. “There are motion-activated electric fences. Fifteen thousand volts. And cannons every twenty feet, all around.”

Sean nodded. He had all he needed to know.

Sean looked at his watch. “Oh man!” he said. “I’ve go to get home! My mom said I could only stay till five!” He turned and ran, praying the electric fence was off.

Once he was safely away, he slowed, panting. He turned on the two-way radio hidden in his shirt. “Uncle--I got the info.”

Sean smiled. Someday, back in his normal life, he would make a great actor.
