The Secret in the Ice

“Wheeeee!” I cried as I skated around the corner of the new skating rink.

“Be careful, Lizzy,” yelled Sara.

But it was too late. Just as Sara called to me, I caught my toe and fell on my face.

Sara skated over. “Are you OK? . . . Whooooa!” Sara screamed as she fell over in a heap!

We started laughing until Sara suddenly stopped and tapped my arm. “L-L-Lizzy,” Sara said nervously.

“What is it?” I asked.

She pointed to the glowing ice and slowly backed away. I heard a crack just as the ice gave way and I felt myself falling.

I reached to grab hold of something, anything, and my hand felt something soft; it was moving, it was glowing, it was alive! I screamed, it screamed. I saw Sara’s hand reaching out for me and I grabbed for it, but when I did I heard a voice.

“Please help me get out of here. I’ve been in here as long as I can remember.”

“OK,” I said, grabbing her hand.

When we were safely on the ice she said, “Thank you for letting me out of this ice prison.”

“Oh, you’re welcome,” Sara said.

“No, really, thank you. I am an evil ice fairy and was locked in here because of my evil power and now I am free to make winter stay here forever, ha-ha-ha.”

“Oh no,” said Sara. “What have I done?”

“Don’t worry,” I whispered. “I have a plan.”

We walked the ice fairy to Sara’s house and went into the kitchen. “You can sleep in the fridge tonight,” I said.

“Oh, OK,” said the evil ice fairy, looking confused.

“We just want you to feel at home,” Sara explained.

The ice fairy got into the fridge. We quickly got some ropes and tied them around it.

“What are you doing? Let me out!” cried the fairy.

I winked at Sara, walked around, and unplugged the fridge.
