Unexpected Visitor Story Contest

Submitted by: Sylvia B., age 10, Atlanta, GA

The wind was in my hair, and it nipped at my bare limbs as I hurdled over bushes. A canopy of trees stood ahead of me, blocking the sunlight, and I had to squint to see. I continued running through the darkness until I reached an especially large tree. I began climbing the tree. The bark felt cold and slimy against my hands, but I still managed to hold on. When I reached the part where the trunk split into branches, I stopped. I carefully lifted a small handle that lay on top of the trunk. This handle was attached to a large part of the top of the trunk, so as I pulled the handle, a lid was removed, opening up an entrance to the hollow tree.

I jumped down into the tree, leaving the lid at the top. The inside of the tree was cozy, and filled with technology. As much as I wanted to, I couldn’t sit down. I had to get working. But before I could even take one more step, I felt the tree rattle, as if it had been struck by lightning.

“What were you thinking, leaving the top entrance open like that, anyone could have seen us!” a voice boomed from the top.

“It’s not like anyone actually drives by,” I mumbled to myself. Then, a touch louder, I added, “I’m sorry.”

Ben scoffed, then jumped down and began working. Ben was the leader of our spy club. He normally was really nice, so why did he lash out at me? I sighed, knowing I would have to think about those things later. I hopped onto the computer and began researching a culprit named JJ Wisenburrow.

After a lot of research, I found nothing. Suddenly, I felt a rope press against my chest. Someone was tying me to a chair! “Ben, help me!” I cried.

I turned to see that Ben was tying me up! But it wasn’t Ben. “Ben” seemed to have pulled off his wig. For behind me stood none other than JJ Wisenburrow.
