Love

I sit at the window
Waiting for Daddy to come home.
I watch the dirt road,
Longing to see his wagon.
I want him to walk through the door
So I can run into his welcoming arms
And bury my face in his clothes.
I long to smell his smell of
Watermelon, sweat, and honeysuckle.
I want him to say,
“How ’bout we go wadin’, Apple  Dumplin’?”
We would run down to the creek
Barefooted,
Feeling the soft clover between our toes.
Then we would pull up our pants and skirt
And walk into the water
Knee deep.

I look up from my daydream
And look down the road.
I see Daddy’s wagon
And know that my dream
Will come
True.
