Why the Wolf Howls to the Moon

Long, long ago, a girl lived among wolves. She called herself Aleni.

At the same time, there lived a monster. The world lived in fear of this thing. His breath alone pushed clouds across the sky and his wings created tornados! He was also greedy and would go to any lengths to satisfy his own desires.

But one day, he went too far. He asked for the lives of the wolves in Aleni’s pack.

Aleni seemed to be no match for this monster. At fifty feet tall, it resided at the top of the highest mountain. Aleni, on the other hand, could barely reach the apples on a tree, small to him in size, but not in heart.

When the monster called down to Aleni to tell her his wish, Aleni resolved to defend her animals against this colossal thing with nothing less than her life. She knew she would die. She also knew that he could NOT touch her wolves.

Aleni ventured up the mountain. It took her no less than one-hundred-one days, and the effort took her a lake of sweat. Finally, she reached the top.

“I’LL CRUSH YOU AND GOBBLE DOWN THOSE WOLVES! DELICIOUS!” A booming sound came from a cave somewhere. Then, with a loud crash, it appeared.

It was a ghastly, frightful thing. Aleni trembled with fear so great, she should have fainted and died.

But instead, she faced the monster, a puny, weak human against this colossal titan.

“No, you won’t,” somehow, Aleni’s voice managed to squeak out. Then she charged, sacrificing herself for her pack.

Aleni’s fierce loyalty to her pack was so great, the gods took pity on her. As her broken body fell and her spirit left this world, a gentle wind lifted her up to the moon. Her wolves sensed it, and they howled in mourning. They sent their cries up to the moon, to where Aleni stays. And to this day, all wolves send their respect to the girl who loved them by howling to the moon.
