Who Fears Whom?

Eons of evolution
Have perfected me
Into a master killer
That all sailors and swimmers
Live in constant fear of,
That humans all over the globe
Have learned to fear and hate.
But is it truth or legend?
Myth or fact?
I attack only on rare occasions
When provoked or
When I mistake a person
For a seal, my favorite food
(you’ll have to excuse my eyesight).
However, who can blame me
When I have been netted,
Speared, tortured,
Hunted to near extinction;
When I have had my fin
Cut off and my body dumped
Back into the sea,
All for shark-fin soup—a great delicacy.
Yes, humans have done terrible things to me.
I live in fear of them, and they live in fear of me.
