Neve and the Frost Dragon

Have you ever seen the swirls of frost on a window after a cold, cold night? They are from the breath of the Frost Dragon, who leaves on every window a different tale of summer. Each tells of the days when warmth will return and flowers bloom, of soft breezes and buzzing bees. But once, the Frost Dragon nearly ran out of stories. This is what happened, and what came of it.

Winter had swept in early, and the Frost Dragon had blown so many stories onto windows that a morning came when he had none left. He flopped down in a snow bank, distraught.

“Excuse me,” said a muffled voice from beneath his glittering scales, “you are sitting on my cloak.”

The Dragon sprang up, apologizing profusely. From under a snow pile scrambled a tiny girl. She had silky white hair and light blue eyes, and wore a glittering frosty cloak. “Hello” she said. “My name is Neve. I take it you are the Frost Dragon?”

“Yes.” The Dragon looked at her curiously. “I can see that you are a snow fairy. Why are you out here, instead of being snug in the ice palace?”

Neve sighed. “I was born without wings and therefore cannot do the things that snow fairies are meant to do. In my heart, I am a storyteller. I am allowed to stay there, but I do not belong. I long to find my place in the world.” She looked up, and her eyes met the dragon’s. “But why do you look sad?”

The Frost Dragon explained his predicament. “Oh!” said Neve. “I have many stories that you could use for your windows. I can tell you all of them!”

The Dragon’s eyes lit up. “You could ride on my back! It’s a rather lonely job and it would be lovely to have some company.”

They did this and became the greatest of friends. So every time you see a window patterned with frost, you will know that they have been there, and that the swirls tell stories.
