The Snow Storm

Have you ever thought of how many hardships animals have to face during Winter? Well, I can tell you how many, because I’m an animal, named Jack the Fox.

So it snowed, I don’t know, about twenty inches last night. I had to find my breakfast. But rodents were in their holes. So I had to look hard.

Eventually I saw a vole. I caught it and ate it. But I forgot one thing: wolves were out hunting, too. Wolves and foxes aren’t friends, so I had to be careful on the way back.

I caught some more prey on the way back. But when I got back I was startled. My den had been raided! Probably wolves, I thought. On snowy days like this, the smallest scent of food drives them mad.

I found shelter inside an old bear den. Each day I went to hunt, the prey got scarcer and scarcer, until the point I was starving. I had to eat berries it was so bad. I was so skinny. You could see my ribs.

But when hope was lost, something happened. The snow was melting! The great thaw had begun! Each day the snow melted more and more, until it melted completely. All the prey came out of their homes. It was like paradise.

I grew quite plump after that. Some days, however, were still hard to face in Winter. But Spring was soon to come.

So now you know about how many hardships animals have to face in Winter.
