An Escape That Came to an End

I squirmed in my seat. This was not fun. Miss Burro, the math teacher, was teaching us to tell time, and it was almost the end of third grade. I’d learned this when I was in kindergarten! I had to escape this boring class somehow.

All year we’d reviewed addition and subtraction facts, followed by easy measurement, and now telling time! What was next? As I completed the simple worksheet that the teacher had given us, I thought, Maybe I should pretend I am sick, and the office will send me home. But then I pondered, It’s hard to pretend to be sick.  How about asking to go to the bathroom, then run back home? That was an idea to consider.

By the time I’d finished thinking, math was over. Now it was time for science, which I really enjoy, since there was always something new to learn. Today, we watched an interesting documentary about the planet Saturn.

During snack time, I climbed on the metal rail outside and thought about my plan. Was it really a good idea? Unfortunately, the time was very short, so it was soon time to head back inside.

After two more class periods, lunchtime finally rolled around. As I chomped on my cheese sandwich, I knew this was the time to put my plan into action. I pushed my chair out and started toward the teacher, but suddenly I realized that school wasn’t so bad after all. Though some subjects seemed boring, they could actually be fun. Many classes had opened up my mind to a universe of learning. I’d made new friends and dived into an ocean of new information every day.

I turned back to my seat and finished my lunch happily. School was cool after all, and I wasn’t going anywhere. My “escape plan” had become my “stay plan,” and I decided to keep learning and enjoying all the opportunities in front of me.
