The New World

In the year 2097, robots are used for all jobs to make things easier for humans. Everyone thinks these cyborgs are miracles, except for me. Way back in my day we spent most of our time working to earn money to support our families. Now that androids do all our tasks, today’s individual are extremely inexperienced. I wish that young kids would realize that there is more to life than cleverly engineered pieces of metal that can move!

Ever since Caleb Ramsey created the robot, humans have taken advantage of it. Yesterday, when I called my family, my granddaughter answered the phone and said, “Gramma! Mommy just got a new robot. It can speak eight languages and it dances, too!” This thoroughly disappointed me, but I had a sweet spot for my granddaughter, so I didn’t say anything to discourage her.

“Give the phone to you mommy, sweetie,” I said calmly.

“Hello?” I heard my daughter say.

“I can’t believe it,” I said with disappointment. “You bought a robot?

“Mom, it was about time. I promise that I won’t rely on it for everything, but we needed to move on,” she said in a firm tone.

“I understand,” I commented, “but you could have consulted me first.”

“I-I wanted to try to make a decision on my own,” she said, her voice faltering a bit. I inhaled deeply.

“Well,” I said, relenting. “I actually think you make the right decision for your family, even if I am not a fan of robots.”

“Really! Thank you so much for supporting me!” she exclaimed.

As I sit here a week before my 113th birthday in my floating apartment in Ohio, I think of the past. Even though new things are being engineered every day, people should not forget the value of hard work.
