New Poetry Contest: Horses

The Horse

A gentle breath on my shoulder
Keeps me warm as we walk through the muddy, sloppy pasture

Your friends whinny you a goodbye
Then huddle together in their shed

A smooth canter around the ring
You will always keep me safe

A dash back to the stable, dodging raindrops
Soft whiskers search my pocket for treats

We trudge back to the pasture
I bury my face in your strong, thick neck

My soft, sweet friend
Saying goodbye is the hardest part of the day
