New Poetry Contest: Birds

Great Blue Heron

He stands,
poised and ready
to let his beak match
with a flavorful catch.

It’s a dance between bird and fish;
a battle of diner and dish.

Will he get to dine
on glittering rivuline?

From his mobile buffet
will he feast today?

Hark! A minnow!
Out with your beak—no!

First, out with one leg,
letting it drag.

Then—
the beak flashes
the fish dashes
but Great Blue Heron has won.
