Postcards

I was on vacation and I was upset. I was not used to being away from my best friend, Soren. I had gone on vacation before, but this time was different. I did not know why, but it just was. It was horrible walking all over Washington D.C. I dragged all over the city thinking about my friend.

My mom said, “Let’s go to the postal museum!”

The museum was free of charge, and there was almost no line. That part was pretty cool, but I still groaned and stumbled in. I hate museums! Even though I complained, there were some interesting displays, like the big wall of postcards. One funny postcard was from a mom that told her family that she was on a business trip, but was really on vacation.

My mom must have noticed that I was upset that day, because when we walked past a big, bald mailman statue holding a bag of letters, she suggested, “Why don’t you write Soren a postcard?” I think she was trying to comfort me.

“How many cards am I allowed to write?” I asked.

“However many you need to feel better,” my mom replied. So I hugged my mom and jogged over to the postcard-writing station. I wrote two cards to my friend Soren. In my cards I wrote about how much I missed Soren and that I couldn’t wait to see him.

I felt so much better after I wrote the postcards. Writing the postcards made me feel very excited and happy that my friend was going to get mail from me. I thanked my mom for the great idea. On our way back to the hotel my mom bought stamps for me so I could mail my postcards.

I was so happy when we came home from vacation. Once we unpacked, I asked, “Mom, can you take me to Soren’s house?”

“OK. I can tell you really missed him.” This was really nice of my mom, because she was very tired.

When we got there, I shouted, “I missed you!” to Soren and his little brother, who were standing in the doorway of the front door. “Did you get my mail?”

Soren nodded. “I was thrilled when your postcards arrived!” I thanked my mom again in my head for her kindness at a time I had been very sad. I was glad to be home.
