Harvest for Hunger

Harvest for Hunger is a fundraising campaign to raise money and food for less fortunate people in northeast Ohio. Once a year, everyone in my school collects cans and raises money for Harvest for Hunger, and I have found it is a fun way to help poor people.

At school we work as a team to see how much money we can earn. We measure our progress on a poster board with a giant thermometer drawn on it. As we mark our progress with red marker, we can see how much more we need to raise to earn rewards along the way. The point of working as a school is to support a good cause and to work together to show kindness to people that need money and food.

Last year, my class helped by collecting cans of food from other classrooms and bringing them to our classroom. We had to sort the cans into piles by size (small, medium, and large). We also raised money by having four dress-down days with different themes, including twin day, crazy hair day, crazy sock day, and a regular dress-down day. (At our school we have to wear uniforms.) Everyone who wanted to participate donated one dollar or a can of food to dress down. On another day, we showed a movie called Ratatouille, and everyone who wanted to see it brought in one dollar and then a little more for concessions like popcorn and water.

My school raised so much money we won the biggest prize: treats, a regular dress-down day, and NO HOMEWORK!

It felt really good to help the community. Knowing we were helping people in need made me really happy. It made me appreciate how lucky I am and how fortunate my friends at school are, because we have plenty of food every day.
