The Creature

A flash of light. Crash!
I wake up to the howling rain.
Knock, knock. Something at the door.
A person? An animal? A sound of the night?
I creep down the stairs to know more.

The wind doesn’t wait for an invitation.
The door slams open.
Standing in the doorway . . . nothing.
No, a figure.
A goblin, a ghoul, floating in the air.
A werewolf with beastly claws,
Or perhaps an apparition.

The creature steps inside, whatever it is.
I quiver, I tremble, I shake in fright.
Confusion and fear circle me, taunt me.
The gooey, furry, pale thing approaches.
Is it real, or a nightmare?

I retreat.
Back and back.
Closer and closer it comes.
Then, I’m falling . . . falling . . .
Everything is small and dark, very dark.
I keep falling . . . and falling . . .  until,
I wake up to a knock at the door.
