Performance

He was an actor;
He didn’t know it yet,
But he wore a mask
And walked on a set.
Each day he spent
Being someone else
He smiled and nodded
But hid his real self.
No one knew what he was feeling;
No one knew his heart.
Whenever anyone asked him
He pretended he was part
Of the “popular group,”
But they weren’t his friends;
They were just performers, too,
Trying to hold on till the end
Of the production
So that they could take off their masks
And reveal their true identity:
Whoever that may be.
We’re all actors
Playing some elaborate act.
We say it’s all a game,
But is that accurate?
