Nature’s Stage

Outside, it’s raining,
Pouring hard, hitting the splintered wood beneath my feet,
But I still dance.
I dance on the deck,
Rain as my props,
Wind, birds, and trees swaying in the breeze.
I raise my head to the sky
And sing for the mosquitoes,
Biting the flesh,
Stinging my bare calves,
Naked feet.
I’m not afraid of the stage,  not afraid of the wood giving way,
And I let go of all my worries,
Spin, thump the motheaten wood hard,
Look out at the crowd,
The sun, still shining through the heavy rain,
Swing dance with no partner,
Feel the rush,
Neighbors looking through their lit windows,
Seeing me taking a bow through the pour,
Giving birth to a rainbow,
Dancing on Nature’s Stage.
