Story Contest: Animal in a Funny Place
A Horse in the Grocery Store
Crash! A brown horse thundered down the aisle, his feathery tail sweeping cans of beans and peaches off the shelves. Once he curved his body around a corner, stopped, and nicked a red apple off the stand. But then he was off again.
The red-faced grocery owner emerged in front of the horse. “Stop, you beast!” he shouted. “Go away from here!”
The horse stopped, reared, and brought his four hooves to earth with a thud. He glared at the two-legged animal who had dared to disobey him so. The grocery store owner shook his fist at the horse. “Out, out, out!”
The horse rolled his eyes at him and galloped away. Round and round he galloped, taking in all the sights and scaring all the customers, except for a small toddler, who pointed his little chubby finger at the horse and said, “Look, Mommy! A horsie!”
The horse also squashed an occasional banana or two. Finally, he decided he was too bored. He headed for the door. An old lady was just coming in. She took one look at the massive animal and ran off screaming. The horse ran out and away.
“At last,” said the grocery store owner, mopping his brow with a towel. Just then, one of his employees walked up to him. “Boss,” he said, “a girl wants to know if she can bring her cat into the store.”
The grocery store owner imagined what a naughty cat would do in the store. Claw the cauliflower and bust open the grapes, perhaps? “Tell her no,” he said. “I think we’ve had enough trouble for today.”
