Story Contest: Animal in a Funny Place
The Fencing Squirrel
One day a squirrel named Chipster longed to learn how to fence. But no squirrel knew how to. So he started to look for sticks to make a fencing sword. He tied the pieces of stick together with a piece of thread. He found the string by the door.
He then grasped his sword and watched the boy through the glass door practice his fencing. Chipster performed all the steps that the boy performed. When the boy left, Chipster practiced the steps he learned.
He took a lunch break and then went back to fencing. He did this for weeks. When the boy wouldn’t show up, Chipster practiced the steps he knew. One afternoon, he looked up on the boy’s roof and saw a bird. He admired it. Chipster wanted to talk to it.
He took his sword and held it with his tail. Then he climbed up the side of the house and next to the bird. Just as he was about to talk, he accidentally scared it away. Then he noticed a hole in the roof.
“Hey! How did that get there?” he thought. He was curious. So he climbed through the hole and lowered himself down into the attic. Chipster thought it was a good place to fence. He didn’t know that when you are in the attic you are not supposed to make noise.
The process went on for weeks. One day, as the boy was in the living room, he heard the thumping of Chipster’s feet. After that, the boy told his parents that a ghost was in the attic. So the family went quietly into the attic. When they saw Chipster, they told their son that it was just a squirrel. After that, they shooed Chipster out and patched their roof.
But secretly, the boy started teaching Chipster how to fence.
