Story Contest: Animal in a Funny Place
The Zoo
The animals were going ballistic. Earlier, all had been peaceful. The giraffes were gnawing on bright green leaves from the tall trees. The tigress was calmly grooming her two cubs. The pride of lions was sleeping soundly. All was well until a tiny chipmunk managed to make its way into the zoo grounds.
Before, climbing through the chain-link fence surrounding the zoo, a small, furry head peered around at all of the commotion. Hundreds of people were walking about, eating food and pointing at exotic animals in exhibits. The chipmunk saw happy people and tired people, tall people and short people. It was almost as if he himself were looking into an exhibit stuffed with human beings.
Curiously, the small rodent hopped down and ambled through the zoo. People screamed, terrified that this small animal would somehow hurt them. Giggling to himself in a rodent sort of way, the chipmunk realized he had the power to make the strongest of humans panic and hide. Suddenly, his pride ceased when a large broom smashed down, only a few inches in front of him.
The chipmunk ran with all his might and jumped into the nearest exhibit. Thinking he was now safe, he looked about himself. He did not see any other animals. Everything was quiet. All of a sudden, a loud trumpet broke the calm silence, and massive feet were rapidly stomping on the ground, attempting to escape from the tiny animal. The chipmunk also tried to escape, for fear of being squished underneath the gigantic foot of an elephant. He quickly hopped through the fence and into the neighboring exhibit.
Instantly realizing this was also a bad exhibit to be in, the chipmunk searched for some way to exit. Unfortunately for him, the enclosed animals saw him before he had a chance to flee. The goofy monkeys scooped up the rodent and began tossing him to one another. He went flying through the air, as easily as a rubber ball. Sadly, the monkeys had poor aim and accidentally threw the chipmunk right into the carnivorous lion exhibit, beginning a deadly chase. . . .
