The Light of My Life

Tests, quizzes, projects, so much work,
I wish that I could just walk away.
Heavy burdens on my shoulders
That never seem to leave.

But when I step through the doorway of my home,
There she has been waiting.
My Labrador, my loyal companion, my best friend,
The light of my life.

Her paws are pitter-pattering on the tile floor,
As she comes to meet me.
She greets me with her warm smile
And the wagging of her tail.
Spinning around in circles,
She’s ready for some love.
As she rolls onto her back,
I give her belly rubs galore.
I lay my head on her stomach,
My body relaxing against her soft fur.
The stress of the work at school
Has all disappeared.
My Sammy reminds me of what really matters in life,
I never want to walk away.

“I love you, Samalama,” I tell her.
“You’re the light of my life.”
