Frenemies

Beautiful golden fur with black streaks,
Huge brown eyes and catlike ears,
Every inch oozing in cuteness, my dog, Kali.
Soft gray fur, green glinting marble eyes,
Every inch regal, my cat, Sambi.
How can such lovable pets fight so much?

Tail wagging, tongue lolling, enjoyment in every stride,
Kali from her walk returns.
Just inches from the door she freezes,
Wariness in every step, she advances as the door opens,
WATCH OUT! A poised paw appears and smacks her with a loud HISS.

Hearing Temptations cat treats in the distance jingling,
Out comes rushing a gray shadow from hiding.
WATCH OUT! a blonde form follows,
Swiftly the cat spins and with poised paw SMACKS,
The dog flattens herself on the floor.

The pitch-black night, dark and silent,
Pitter patter of nails vibrates through the stillness,
With straight gray tail steadily moving,
WATCH OUT! A black nose pokes out from under the covers,
The bed creaks as Sambi jumps and lands,
She pauses, sniffs and licks the dog,
Then flops next to her, and they sleep side by side.

What are these two pets? Friends or foes?
The answer to this mystery no one knows.
