The Garden

Reyna Lucia Grant lived in New York City, in a small apartment with her dog and parents. Every day, when Reyna came home from school, she would walk her dog Anna.

Reyna would always look for one apartment that had a window box. It seemed so joyful, all decked out in zinnias and marigolds, violets and impatiens. Reyna longed for a garden of her own.

One day, on her walk, Reyna saw an old window box in an empty lot. She picked it up and brought it home.

The next day, Reyna filled the box with dirt, took her allowance, and bought some pansy seeds. She planted them.

Reyna went to the library. She read books about seeds. She watered her plants every day. Soon, the little flowers bloomed.

Reyna fought bad bugs and struggled to attract good bugs, but as last, Reyna had her wish, and, just like the other apartment, Reyna had a joyful sight.

People smiled up at her beautiful flowers. They waved, and she waved back.

Autumn came, but Reyna was not sad when her plants withered and died—she knew what she would do next year.
