New Poetry Contest: I Wonder

Wild

As we set off along the trail, I had only one thought:
Escape.
At the first chance, I ran.
My siblings’ voices faded, and I was alone.
I stood there.
For a single silver second,
all the world was silence.
Then a tidal wave of joy swept over my mind,
and I was free.
The rushing wind.
The singing birds.
The laughing brook.
I could almost hear each blade of grass growing.
The trees poured their eternal strength into my heart.
The deer’s speed, the eagle’s cry, the cougar’s strength
flowed in my veins.
My very soul grew wings.
I was soaring with dragons.
Dancing with gryphons.
Singing with the phoenix.
And for a moment,
I was alive.
