Opinions

As I walked down the stairs on a Saturday morning, I couldn’t help thinking about the fight my sister and I had yesterday about the news we saw on TV.

We always fought about small things, like who would clean up from dinner or take the dog for a walk, but we never had a fight this big. After watching the climate strike yesterday evening, I thought it was outrageous that people are trashing the planet. My sister thought that without all of our possessions that “trash the planet” it would be pretty difficult for humans to change their habits, because we’ve become too comfortable in this way of life.

Although I know it would be difficult, I think not impossible. I had a strong opinion and didn’t like being wrong. And that was the same with my sister.

I poured myself a bowl of cereal and sat down at the head of the table. I picked up the latest Cricket from the stack of magazines nearby and flipped to the page with the finalists from the story-writing contest.

My sister sat on the other side of the table. She was reading last month’s Cricket. We didn’t talk or look at each other.

I got up from the table to get more cereal. “So,” I said as I sat down, “the news was pretty shocking last night.” I spooned some cereal into my mouth.

“Yeah,” she said with her head down.

“I think you’re right,” I said, a little embarrassed and red faced.

“No, you’re right,” my sister said. “There is no Planet B. If we don’t start reducing the amount of waste we make, well . . . let’s just say that it won’t be good.”

I laughed as I put my bowl in the sink. We talked all morning about the climate strike and how our family could do better at helping the environment. It was interesting. Fights always have a way of working themselves out, because even though we have different opinions, we want to find the best way forward. And that’s a great thing.
