The New Beginning for an Orchid

Week 1

I am now stuck in a shell. No, not a seashell! A shell people call “seed.” Oops. Sorry! I forgot to introduce myself! My name is . . . Um, actually, I don’t’ have a name. But all I know is that I will bloom into a beautiful flower called orchid.

You may be wondering if I know what I will look like. No, I don’t know. But during most of the time in my seed (especially when I get bored here, which happens quite often), I daydream about what I will look like when I grow up. I always wonder if I will be in a shade of dazzling pink, sun-golden yellow, sea blue, elegant purple, or just plain white (which is the last on my list). Other times while I am not daydreaming, I take a nap and eat from my cotyledon (which is like a mini buffet in my seed). The cotyledon gives nutrients to me; I am, at this stage, an embryo.

Ha ha ha! That tickles! Oh, sorry, it’s just that the water is trickling in. You see, the seed absorbs the water, which my gardener pours into the soil. Then, I drink the water and grow stronger.

Week 2

I have started to grow roots. They stretch out to collect nutrients from the soil. I eat the nutrients and continue to grow. I am now out of the ground and get food through photosynthesis. Photosynthesis is the process of creating glucose, or in other words, sugar. I collect water from the ground with my roots, the sun’s energy with my leaves, and carbon dioxide, which is the stuff people breathe out. Along with the collection, I mix the three to create glucose! I will give out fresh oxygen during the process for people to breathe in.

Week 3

I am now fully grown. I will have flowers for about eight to twelve weeks. For now, I will have to wait for my flowers to come. Finally, I will know what color my flowers are!
